At last week’s Neil Young & Crazy Horse show in Biarritz, France on July 18, Neil surprised the crowd during the acoustic portion of the show, with the rarely played “Human Highway” from the Comes A Time album.

While there haven’t been many setlist shakeups on the European leg of the Alchemy tour, this would have to qualify as a fairly major one. According to a report on the Noise 11 website (which also posted the video we are re-posting here, just below):

“Young has only performed the song live 13 times in the past 30 years plus another three times with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, twice in 2003 and once in 1989.”

Here is that video. “Human Highway” is sandwiched between “Heart Of Gold” and a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ In The Wind” here – making for a very tasty solo three-pack indeed. The quality of the video is also surprisingly good.

First off, we’d like to extend our apologies for the lack of updates here at the NYFAQ blog of late.

With not a lot of changes to report in the setlists on the Alchemy tour in Europe (occasional “holy shit!” moments like “Red Sun” notwithstanding), we just took it upon ourselves to take a brief – if wholly unintentional – summer vacation. Anyway, we appreciate your patience and thank you for sticking with us.

Paul McCartney brought his Out There tour to Seattle’s Safeco Field this past weekend. It was an epic, 39 song, 3 hour set spanning his entire career, from his days with the Beatles to his years as a solo artist and with Wings.

For the encores, Paul also reunited the surviving members of Nirvana for several songs, adding a little hometown history to an already magnificent show.

But seeing Macca’s performance this weekend also got us to thinking about the “cute one’s” ties to our good friend Neil Young. There is obviously a mutual respect and admiration there. It was after all, Neil Young who inducted Sir Paul into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

More recently, Neil spoke at the ceremony where Macca received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Neil Young & Crazy Horse also did a fine job of destroying “I Saw Her Standing There” at the Grammy concert celebrating Paul McCartney as MusiCares person of the year (Neil himself is also a past honoree).

So, we thought it appropriate that for our first update to the NYFAQ blog in nearly two months, we would share a couple of choice videos of Neil and Paul performing together.

This first clip comes from the Annual Bridge School benefit (which Macca has played a few times over the years). Sir Paul joins Neil Young here on a lovely sounding “Only Love Can Break Your Heart.”

This next clip comes from London’s Hyde Park near the end of the Chrome Dreams Tour in 2009.

About midway through a sublime take on John Lennon’s “A Day In The Life,” and in one of those aforementioned “holy shit!” moments, Neil is joined onstage by Paul McCartney to recreate his vocal part from the Sgt. Pepper classic. Both Neil and Paul seem to be having a great time here, and needless to say, the crowd goes appropriately nuts.

There’s some nice guitar shred on Old Black at the end too.
